Free Will vs. Destiny: Are We in Control of Our Lives?
Free Will vs. Destiny: Are We in Control of Our Lives?
Lately, I’ve been thinking about one of those big questions that never really goes away: how much of my life am I steering, and how much is already written in the stars?
You know that feeling when something unfolds so perfectly—or so painfully—that you think, “Okay, there’s no way this was random. It’s those moments that remind me there’s a fine line between what we choose and what chooses us.
Here’s where I’ve landed, (at least for now). I think of Destiny as a kind of soul plan — the cast of characters, challenges, and turning points that help us evolve into ourselves.. Free will, though, is the magic of being human. It’s how we bring that plan to life — the choices that make the story uniquely ours.
Let’s make this a little more everyday…
Think about the people who cross your path. You don’t really choose who shows up in your life—your family, the coworker who ends up sitting next to you for years, the stranger who becomes an important friend. Those feel a little like destiny… the cast of characters that appear on your stage.
But what you do with those relationships? That’s free will. You choose whether to grow, to forgive, to walk away, to lean in, or to learn something from the experience.
The meeting may have been written into the story.
The way the story unfolds—that part is yours.
I don’t think one cancels out the other. I think they’re in cahoots. Destiny sets the stage; free will chooses the dance. When I see it that way, life feels less like a test and more like a creative collaboration between me and the universe. There’s room for both surrender and responsibility.
Here’s your homework.
Ask yourself…or perhaps journal:
- Where do I still act like life is just happening to me?
- Where might I claim more say in how it unfolds?
- What would it feel like to stop trying to control the story and start co-writing it?
You don’t need an instant answer—just curiosity. Sometimes awareness alone loosens the old patterns.
If you’re curious to explore ideas like this further, I share more insights, reflections, and energy updates at soulquirk.com. Come take a look around—you might find something that meets you exactly where you are on your path.
Until next time, may your choices feel aligned, and your destiny feel like it’s cheering you on.
